Act IV Scene I Summary

It is late morning on Tuesday at the Jungle Room in the Madingo Golf Club. The pensive Justice Jaden is waiting for Mr. Harvester for a talk. When the latter arrives, Jaden informs him that he is in a mess and needs his help concerning The Samaritan, but Harvester tells him that he himself has been accused in the App of countless crimes that he hasn't committed.

Justice Jaden, however, tells him that they should find out a way of helping one another. Justice Jaden informs Mr Harvester that Mayor Mossi has instructed lawyers, acting for the Municipal Council, to file cases against Hon. Ramdaye, Hon. Seymour, Hon. Ted and Hon. Basdeo and that the Mayor wants him to jail the four as soon as legally possible, to derail the vote of no confidence. He tells Mr. Harvester that the Mayor's demand puts him at a crossroads because he cannot convict Mr. Basdeo and Hon. Ramdaye, for they paid him, at some point, by giving him shares of a company that the Municipal Council is suing. He says even if he disqualifies himself from hearing the case, his name would still be dragged into the case because of his shareholding in the company in which Ramdaye and Basdeo are also shareholders, and the rulings he made, complicate the entire issue for him.

Noting that to err is human, Jaden tells Mr. Harvester that they must make decisions that will result in the greatest happiness for the greatest number of people since both the Mayor and the members of Hon. Basdeo's team are up in arms and neither is clean. He concludes that if they all sit down and talk, they would arrive at an amicable solution that will result in the greatest happiness for the greatest number. He, thus, asks Mr Harvester to approach these two groups- Mayor Mossi on one side, and Hon. Basdeo, Hon. Ramdaye, Hon. Seymour and Hon, Ted on the other, with the idea of seeking a truce, for he believes he can. Jaden believes that if the leaders could speak in a single voice, they could deal with The Samaritan (their perceived enemy) as one united force. He asks Mr Harvester to talk to them about that night and arrange for a meeting first thing the following day morning at his chambers.
