Act III Scene III Summary

It is late afternoon at the Madingo Golf Club in the Jungle Room on a Monday. Over a glass of a soft drink, Inspector Bembe informs the Mayor that he went to see Nicole (the teacher) the previous Friday but reports she refused to comply with his demand to have The Samaritan halted. He adds that he arrested her and then charged her with disobeying authorities and stealing the school generator, but she was set free after Justice Jaden dismissed the case, possibly for lack of evidence since even the people the Inspector had sent to steal the generator didn't do it Inspector Bembe tells the Mayor that he is a gravely worried man since his bosses have summoned him at the headquarters in the Capital on account of Nicole's arrest, and observes his situation is out of hand.

Mayor Mossi expresses his gratefulness towards Inspector Bembe for making it impossible for Ramdaye and his team to meet and discuss the vote of no confidence. The Inspector informs the Mayor that the team is regrouping and they have planned a massive political rally at the Atobold Stadium in the coming Wednesday.

Although Bembe tells the Mayor they could stop the rally just as they previously did, he points out that stopping it won't help much since he has got wind from a former colleague that the Anti-Corruption Investigation Bureau might soon move in at the Municipal Headquarters. The Mayor tells Bembe that it is Justice Jaden who, though he had seemed adamant when he talked to him about convicting Ramdaye and company, holds the key out of their present mess.

He the Inspector that he had requested Jaden for a meeting that day and that they had no choice but to get him to their side. After Justice Jaden arrives, Mayor Mossi apologizes to him for not informing him beforehand that Inspector Bembe would be in attendance. He informs him again that there is a move to remove him from office, adding that he must fight back. He, once more, insists to Justice Jaden on instituting legal proceedings against his Deputy and his team and secure convictions the possible soon (preferably even in a day) so that they can derail the plan to remove him from office. Jaden, however, tells the Mayor that no one would agree with him that a case is lodged, processed and determined on the same day. He, therefore, turns down the Mayor's demand.

In order to blackmail and intimidate Justice Jaden into working with them on the matter of Ramdaye and his team, the Mayor revisits the cases involving Prime Orchard Farm a farm that rears rats and other rodents that have been a menace in the Municipality- that he heard and determined in favour of the farm because he and his longstanding mistress are shareholders. The account of the cases, though riddled with exaggeration, is convicting enough on Justice Jaden, and he eventually yields to the Mayor's call, though insisting they must be strategic. Justice Jaden rues for having been too selfish and greedy to use his public office to amass wealth, greed that threatens to destroy him.
