Introduction to the Parliament of Owls Essay

In most African countries, the people bestowed with power tend to misuse it and exploit their subjects. This can be clearly seen in Adipo Sidang’s ‘Parliament of Owls’. Money Bags Owl and his sycophants use his power to subjugate the small day birds in the kingdom. He steals their eggs, gets rid of his threats and passes laws that favour the Owls at the expense of the day birds such as the moonlight bill.

The Body of the Parliament of Owls Essay

Money Bags sponsors the Moonlight Bill which limits the day birds from twittering and flying from tree to tree past 6:00 PM. Day birds will no longer be able to sing for their young ones. They also have to register their eggs with Olik Tiga, a ploy to steal their eggs.

Money Bags extorts money from the day birds with the introduction of the Moonlight Bill. Birds are expected to pay ‘moonlight tax’ to cater for the longer supervising hours and to help the parliament protect the kingdom.

Money Bags through the Puppet Owls kills Arum Tidi. Arum Tidi who has been trying hard to please Money Bags is killed after he is heard singing the freedom song thus acting against the interests of the Royal Trees.

Tel is arrested when she refuses to spread propaganda about the ‘Moonlight Bill’ to the day birds.

Osogo’s family is killed by Red String.

Oyundi is arrested when she is reported to have had a secret meeting with Ogila the hare. They are afraid she is behind the demonstrations against the oppressive rule of the Owls.

Conclusion to the Parliament of Owls essay

To conclude, birds like Money Bags, The Puppet Owls and The Royal Owls use their power to subjugate the day birds as they are small and seem powerless against the night birds.
